ONLINE MOTORCYCLE INSURANCE
– THE BEST PROTECTION FOR YOUR LEISURE TIME
Most online motorcycle insurance quotes are for plans that offer liability protection in addition to comprehensive and collision. But think about what else you might require. Understand that a lot of carriers depreciate claim settlements. You’ll need a plan that offers replacement cost coverage, not actual cash value, if it’s important for you to be able to replace your bike in the event of a total loss.
Some of the online policies we reviewed included:
- Accessory coverage – for those flashy add-ons that are not
included as standard by the manufacturer, which were added on to the bike.
Also known as Custom Parts and Equipment coverage (CPE), this policy will
cover equipment, devices, trimmings, improvements, and alterations, other
than those that the manufacturer initially installs, that change the look
and functioning of the motorcycle.
- Agreed value coverage – locks in the value of your motorbike
at a fixed price except for depreciation of tires, batteries and engine parts.
- Bodily injury liability – this coverage provides protection
on your behalf to anybody to whom you become legally liable owing to a bike
accident that causes injury, illness or death.
- Collision – provides protection against loss caused by collision
or upset. Your insurance company pays for damage to your motorcycle when you
run into another vehicle or object.
- Comprehensive – provides protection for your motorcycle for
damage that occurs as a result of loss other than collision.
- Medical payments – not considering fault, this coverage provides
excess medical payments coverage, for any operator or person along for the
ride, subject to the coverage limit and deductible. The coverage often is
restricted to medical treatment received within the first three years after
an accident and is limited to a specific dollar amount.
- Passenger liability – provides protection to a passenger
who is not insured if you become legally liable to him or her due to an accident.
- Property damage liability – provides protection for other
people’s property if you become legally responsible for the damage while
operating the insured motorcycle.
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage –
offers cover for your injuries or death if you are involved in an accident
with a motorist who has no insurance or insufficient coverage and the other
party is considered at fault. You can use underinsured motorist bodily injury
coverage to pay for the amount not covered by the at-fault person’s
insurance if your injury expenses go beyond his or her liability limits.
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist property damage coverage –
this policy offers additional protection against property damage caused by
a motorist with the coverage deficit described above.
- Roadside assistance – some insurance companies offer 24-hour
emergency road service programs as a benefit to their customers. This coverage
extends to trailers being towed by a motorcycle.
It is a legal requirement that you get liability coverage. You should also carry as much medical insurance as you can. Comprehensive/collision is also helpful for if the bike is stolen, damaged, destroyed by fire, or crashed, etc. There are additional benefits but these vary. Insurance costs differ based on age, sex, physical location, and type and size of motorcycle
